An experimental electric route commenced on 13 October 1898 and was considered a success. The city-wide horse-drawn tram service was withdrawn at the end of April 1902. Glasgow Corporation also developed bus routes and Glasgow Corporation Tramways was renamed Glasgow Corporation Transport in 1929. A Glasgow Corporation Transport Map from 1934 shows the extent of the Glasgow Corporation Transport network then.

In 1949 one tram line was converted to trolleybus operation. Thereafter Glasgow developed several trolleybus routes, but these were all replaced by diesel buses by 1967. The tram system was gradually phased out in favour of diesel-powered buses between 1956 and 1962, with the final trams operating on 4 September 1962.

In 1972 the Scottish Tramway Museum Society issued a philatelic numismatic cover (PNC) to commemorate the centenary of Glasgow trams. The PNC contains the then current Glasgow Corporation transport tokens.

The Local Government Act necessitated change. Glasgow Corporation Transport was replaced by the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive (GGPTE) in 1973. This organisation was replaced by the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive (SPTE) in 1975, under the overall direction of Strathclyde Regional Council although rebranding to SPTE livery was not fully implemented until 1983. Section 40 of the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 created a new statutory corporation, the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority (SPTA), which took over all of the functions, staff, property, rights, liabilities and obligations of Strathclyde Regional Council as Passenger Transport Authority on 1 Apr 1996.

On 1 April 2006 - following the passing of the Transport (Scotland) Act 2005 - Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority, along with the WESTRANS voluntary regional transport partnership, were replaced by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
