Galashiels was originally built to accommodate pilgrims to Melrose Abbey and became a burgh of barony in 1599. The Galashiels Manufacturers’ Corporation was established in 1777. To encourage the construction of mills, it built a mill lade alnong which mills could be built. At it's peak Galashiels had a large number of mills operating and a population of about 20,000. The population reduced substantially with the closing of the mills. A train station was opened on the Waverley lin ein 1849, closing in 1969. A new train station opened in 2015.

===GALASHIELS CO-OPERATIVE STORE COMPANY  1842-1909===
The Weaver's Corporation in Galashiels, a society organised by weavers to regulate the trade, can be traced back to 1666. Galashiels Co-operative Store traced it's origins to members of this society<ref>Southern Reporter, 27 Oct 1892, page 4</ref>
The rules for the store are dated 1839. One of the rules was that any surplus profits were to be divided among the members every three months by reducing the price of goods. This is in effect an early form of dividends paid in society check. Other rules concerned checks. The member received one check per share. If the member had more tha one check, the member could give one of the additional checks to friends or neighbours. A check had to be shown for someone to make a purchase from the store. Unlike the society in [[Hawick Co-operatives|Hawick]], there was no requirement for members to be Chartists.
In 1842 the surplus from the Weaver's Corporation was used to open a store in a house in Overhaugh Street, with 5s shares being issued to the members. The Galashiels bakers refused to supply the store, so bread was obtained from Gattonside. In 1844 the store was moved to Bank Street. In 1845 a branch, the Western store, was opened and it was reported that the members had seen a 305 increase in the value of their shares<ref>Kelso Chronicle, 29 Aug 1845, page 6</ref>. In May 1853 the society decided to not change it's rules and register under the Provident Societies Act with the majority of the members seeing no benefit in registering<ref>The Glasgow Sentinel, 07 May 1853, page 3</ref>. A second vote in October had the same result. In 1854 the society started paying a dividend on purchases.
In 1867 the society opened it's new store it had built in Bank Street to accomodate the expansion in business and  to replace the middle and eastern stores<ref>Southern Reporter, 21 Mar 1867, page 2</ref>. A management dispute in that year led to a number of members leaving and forming Galashiels Waverley. In 1881 the society appointed a full time general secretary. To accomodate the expanding business, the society opened a new store on Roxburgh Street in 1889.
The society celebrated it's jubilee in 1892. Although the society registered as the Galashiels Co-operative Society in 1863, the society is indicated as only using this name from about 1895.
The society re-united with Galashiels Waverley in 1909 to form Galashiel United.

GALASHIELS CO-OPERATIVE STORE COMPANY 1842-1909

The Weaver's Corporation in Galashiels, a society organised by weavers to regulate the trade, can be traced back to 1666. Galashiels Co-operative Store traced it's origins to members of this society[1]

Unlike the society in Hawick, there was no requirement for members to be Chartists.

In 1845 a branch, the Western store, was opened and it was reported that the members had seen a 305 increase in the value of their shares[2]. In May 1853 the society decided to not change it's rules and register under the Provident Societies Act with the majority of the members seeing no benefit in registering[3]. A second vote in October had the same result. In 1854 the society started paying a dividend on purchases.

In 1867 the society opened it's new store it had built in Bank Street to accomodate the expansion in business and to replace the middle and eastern stores[4].
