Forfar is a market town and the administrative centre of Angus, which at one time was also called Forfarshire.

The town was a significant manufacturer of jute and linen but, lacking a significant river, was dominated by hand loom weaving. The token opposite was isud by John Steele and shows the town from Forfar Loch, an inland lake. John Steele or his son of the same name is listed in Pigot's 1825 Scotland directory as having a drapery store in High Street and being a merchant or manufacturer of green cloth in West Port (later called West High Street). The first mill was constructed around 1860 and is shown on the 1861 ordinance survey map as a steam driven mill. Although the industry declined, the decline was slower in Forfar than Dundee. There is still limited cloth manufacturing in the town using modern materials. Today the town is primarily a market town and tourist centre.

The first train station in the town was Forfar Playfield railway station, opened in 1838, which was a terminus station. The line was extended and a new through station opened in 1848. The station closed to passengers in 1967.

In 1852 Forfar had seven co-operatives. A meeting to discuss merger of the Forfar co-operatives was held in July 1919. Forfar United was formed in 1921 by merger of Free Trade and High Street only, with the others closing between 1921 and 1946.

Forfar United merged with Kerriemuir in 1969 to form South Angus. This merged with Arbroath in 1974 to form East Angus. East Angus merged with Lothian & Borders in 1998 to form Lothian, Borders & Angus.
