Forfar is a market town and the administrative centre of Angus.
The town was a significant manufacturer of jute and linen but, lacking a significant river, was dominated late on by hand loom weaving until about 1860, when the first mills were constructed. Although the industry declined, the decline was slower in Forfar than Dundee. There is still limited cloth manufacturing in the town using modern materials. Today the town is primarily a market town and tourist centre.
The first train station in the town was Forfar Playfield railway station, opened in 1838, which was a terminus station. The line was extended and a new through station opened in 1848. The station closed to passengers in 1967.

Forfar United merged with Kerriemuir in 1969 to form South Angus. This merged with Arbroath in 1974 to form East Angus. East Angus merged with Lothian & Borders in 1998 to form Lothian, Borders & Angus.
FORFAR FREE TRADE SAVING ASSOCIATION 1850-1921
The society started in 1850. It merged with High Street in 1921 to form Forfar United.

The society was started in 1848. It merged with Free Trade in 1921 to form Forfar United.

FORFAR NORTHERN SAVING ASSOCIATION 1874-1943
The society was started in 1874. The society was using checks in 1940. In July 1943 a meeting was called to discuss disposal of the society's property and closure of the society. The society was dissolved in 1943 and struck off the register in 1944.

FORFAR WEST TOWN END ASSOCIATION 1881-1945
The society was started in 1881 and registered in 1886. The compay paid out the share capital to it's members in December 1945 and was removed from the register in 1946
