Fauldhouse was a small group of farm towns. There was a coal mine in the area as early as 1790. However it was the identification of ironstone in the area in 1830 that led to developement of the settlements. The Coltness and Shotts Iron Companies built houses for their workforce, devloping three settlements main - Fauldhouse, Drybridge and Greenburn. A station was opened at Greenburn in 1845 called Crofthead Station after the main mine workings. In the mid 1800s ironstone mining was ending but was replaced by coal mining to the north and west with shale mining to the east. An oil extraction plant was built close to the village to exploit the shale. At one time there were twenty mines were in operation around Fauldhouse, with the last closing in 1974.

The extensive mining in the area led to growth of the settlements until they merged into one village. The 1895 survey map shows Fauldhouse and Greenburn with Crofthead a small hamlet to the East. The map opposite, reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland, is from 1910. By this time all the settlements had grown into one town.

Fauldhouse is now mainly a commutor village for the surround towns.
