Dundee was an important fishing centre from early times and became home to one of Scotland’s largest whaling fleets. Weaving was also also important to the town, the token opposite proudly proclaiming that in 1796 the town imported 3336 tons of flax and hemp with a value of £160,128. Early in the 19th century it was discovered that jute fibre mixed with whale oil could be woven into sacking for bags and carpet backing, leading to the city's textile manufacturers focusing on jute production and associated products. Dundee also became prominent in the production of confectionery and preserves. Dundee was created a city in 1892.

With the decline of the textile industry, activity in light manufacture increased in Dundee with information technology and biotechnology become more prominant lately.
