Dreghorn was a small farming village. It developed in the 19th century in association with coal mining and the related brick manufacturing. A train station was opened in 1868. The train station closed in 1964 and all of the local coal mines had closed by the early 1980s. As a result of being included in the designated area for Irvine New Town, Dreghorn was greatly expanded from 1969 to 1971 by the Irvine Development Corporation, primarily as a commutor village.

The society started in 1875, opening a store towards the end of that year. It joined the SCWS in the following year. In 1964 [[Irvine & Fullarton Co-operatives|Irvine & Fullarton]] opened Seagate house, a two story department store. It closed all it's smaller stores and accepted the Dreghorn society joining it.
