Denny was a small village until about 1750. In 1783 Herbertshire calico printfields were established followed by the Denovan works in 1800. Herbertshire Paper Mill was established in 1788 and Carron Grove Paper Mill in 1815 with other paper mills being established later in the 1800s making Denny an important centre for papermaking in Scotland. A railway branch was built to the town in 1859 leading to the establishment of an ironworks and the devlopment of mining.
The original village of Dunipace has now largely disappeared. A bridge was built across the Carron to join Denny and Milltown of Dunipace in 1825. This led to the growth of Milltown of Dunipace that, with the decline of the orginal Dunipace, took on the name of Dunipace. The two villages became united as one burgh in 1877.
DENNY & DUNIPACE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1872-1982
The society was formed in 1872 and opened a small store in Stirling Street. Within 6 months the society was looking at starting a bakery. In June 1879 the society was declaring a dividend of 2s 1d per £1 on groceries, beef and drapery with a dividend of 3s 2d per £1 on bread[1]. The society opened a new premises in February 1887[2]
The society joined the CWS in 1982.
Falkirk Museum has 322 Denny and Dunipace plastic tokens in its collection. These are 6 dark blue 2/-, 2 green 1/-, 17 black 6d, 56 red 3d, 84 white 1d and 57 pink 1/2d.
