The society was started in 1840. It is recorded as having attending the 1852 Ayrshire co-operative conference. When a second store was opened in that year, this society became known as the Old Store. By 1858 it was known as the Economical Society. Around 1868 the society became known as the Industrial Society. The Darvel, Galston and Newmilns societies joined together to form Loudoun in 1971. Loudoun joined the CWS in 1994.

DARVEL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1852-1869
This store was opened in 1852 and was locally known as the New Store. Tokens were introduced in 1860 with the report that members preferred this phyiscal record to purchases being recorded in a register only. The store joined with the Industrial Society in 1869 but split again in 1870. The indication is that the resurrection of the society did not last long, with trading ceasing between 1870 and 1875.
