John Campbell, the Earl of Loudoun, established Darvel to provide homes and employment for people displaced from the land. An initial 12 plots or feus were let in 1752 and by 1780 the population was over 400. The village expanded as a hand loom weaving village, with a population of 1360 by 1841. In 1876 lace making was introduced to the Irvine Valley, and lace mills were established in Darvel, which for a period dominated the town's economy. Due to overseas competition, the factories in the town also diversified into other textiles. However the industry was in trouble by the late 1970s and by the 1990s almost all the factories had closed. Most of the factories have now been demolished and replaced by housing.

DARVEL INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1840-1971

The society was started in 1840. It is recorded as having attending the 1852 Ayrshire co-operative conference. When a second store was opened in that year, this society became known as the Old Store. By 1858 it was known as the Economical Society. Around 1868 the society became known as the Industrial Society. The Darvel, Galston and Newmilns societies joined together to form Loudoun in 1971. Loudoun joined the CWS in 1994.

DARVEL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1852-1869

This store was opened in 1852 and was locally known as the New Store. Tokens were introduced in 1860 with the report that members preferred this phyiscal record to purchases being recorded in a register only. The store joined with the Industrial Society in 1869 but split again in 1870. The indication is that the resurrection of the society did not last long, with trading ceasing between 1870 and 1875.
