Crosshouse is about 3km west of Kilmarnock that grew around a crossroads on the Kilmarock to Irvine road.  The town grew with mining and the associated brick/fireclay manufacture. Busbie Colliery closed in 1900, Windyedge in 1925 and Thornton in 1953. The Plan Freclay Works was in operation until about 1970. Crosshouse had a large Massey-Ferguson tractor plant at Moorfield, which closed in 1977. Crosshouse Hospital, opened in 1984, and is the principal general hospital for the area.

By 1867 it had branches in Kilmaurs, Springside and Gatehead. At this time it's customers were mainly from the mining community.
