Crosshouse is about 3km west of Kilmarnock that grew around a crossroads on the Kilmarock to Irvine road. The town grew with mining and the associated brick/fireclay manufacture. Busbie Colliery closed in 1900, Windyedge in 1925 and Thornton in 1953. The Plan Freclay Works was in operation until about 1970. Crosshouse had a large Massey-Ferguson tractor plant at Moorfield, which closed in 1977. Crosshouse Hospital, opened in 1984, and is the principal general hospital for the area. | |||
