Crieff Co-operatives
Crieff is on the border between the Highlands and the Lowlands. At one time it was the administrative capital of Celtic Earls. During the 18th century the town became a market town for cattle from the Highland, including the Outer Hebrides, with upto 30,000 cattle being sold in October. The cattle were driven south from here to markets in the Scottish Lowlands and England. In 1731 the Duke of Perth laid out a new town centre and established a flax factory with weaving becoming a main industry in Crieff. A railway station was opened in 1856 which aided in Crieff becoming fashionable for Highland tourists and a country retreat for wealthy businessmen. This led to Crieff Hydro opening in 1868. The railway station was closed in 1964.
CRIEFF CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1875-1927
The society was formed in 1875. In 1885 the society decided to move to larger premises and to establish a bakery[1]
Muthill united with Crieff in late 1927 to form Crieff & Dsitrict. This society joined the SCRS in 1967.
