Carnoustie was originally a farm town that by around 1750 was a weaving village with farming and fishing also important to the local economy. The owners of Carnoustie started selling feus in the 1790s, which were mainly bought by weavers. A railway station was opened in 1838. Carnoustie also established itself as a centre for malting barley. The arrival of the railway led to Carnoustie becoming a commutor town for Dundee and developing as a seaside resort, which included the establishment of golf courses. The Panmure Works, a linen factory, was opened in 1857, followed by the smaller Taymouth Linen Works in 1867. By 1898 Taymouth Works was owned and operated by a foundry company. CARNOUSTIE CO-OPERATIVE ASSOCIATION 1857-1967
The society was formed in 1857 and appears to have used the name Carnoustie Provisions Association, obtaining a salesman from the Auchtermuchty Provisions Company in March 1860. It paid a dividend on shares. By 1862 it had adopted the name Carnoustie Co-operative Association and by JUne that year was paying dividends o purchases as well as shares. At this time it was proposing to adopt the Rochdale system and registered as co-operative. The society became limited in 1863. In 1885 the society trialled paper checks but found them to be too time consuming and expensive, so returned to metal checks. The society joined the SCRS in 1967.
