The town was originally known as Kinlochkilkerran. It was renamed Campbeltown was renamed in the 17th century by Archibald Campbell, the Earl of Argyll. The town developed as a fishing port and distillery centre. A creamery was established on the site of an old distillery in 1910 that used local farmers' milk. The creamery was closed in 2017 with the site being taken over by a transport company.
CAMBELTOWN CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1886-1945
The society was started in 1886 and became a retail branch of the SCWS in 1945.
