BonessHarbour.1900.jpg

Borrowstounness, most commonly known as Bo'ness, is a harbour town on the South bank of the Firth of Forth. Coal is recorded as being shipped from the From Bo'ness to Edinburgh in the 16th century. The town was granted the right of export and customs dues in 1672 and a harbour was authorised in 1707. The harbour was extended in stages after that, with a dry dock being built in 1881. As well as it's involvement in coal mining, Bo'ness had salt making, fishing and pottery concerns. An iron foundry company, Bo'ness Iron Company, was started in 1857. Kinneil Colliery was opened in the late 19th century and eventually, through mining under the Forth, merged with Valleyfield Colliery on the North side of the Forth. At the start of the 20th Century Bo'ness was also involved in ship building and had a shipbreaking yard. The picture opposite shows Bo'ness harbour around 1900.

Decline in the coal industry and silting issues led to the closure of the commercial port in 1959 and teh ship breaking yard closed around 1970. The Kinneil Colliery closed in 1982. Bo'ness still has some industries, including the iron foundry. The town serves as a commutor town for surrounding towns and the harbour has been developed for leisure purposes.

BO'NESS CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1861-1982

The society was formed in 1861 with an initial membership of 20. The shares were £1 each with each member being able to hold a maximum of 20 shares, with an downpayment of 1s and a minimum weekly payment of 3d. A store was opened in June that traded on Saturdays and Monday nights only. In October they employed a sales girl with a salary of 8s per week. Her hours were 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 10pm Saturday. The society got into diffculty, declaring no dividend, which led to a motion to dissolve the society. This was defeated and in 1867 the society was making porgress. In 1876 the society opened new premises on South Street[1]. The society continued to expand, including opening a branch in Linlithgow.

In 1890 the society issued a prospectus for a production society, the Bo'ness Industrial Pottery and Manufacturing Society. The pottery society was formed but it never became established, closing after about four years with all share capital lost.

The society joined Scottish Midland (ScotMid) in 1982.
