Bannockburn is on the old turnpike road from Edinburgh to Stirling. It developed as a mill town, making carpets, tweed and wool. The most famous manufacturer was the Wislons, who in the late 18th and early 19th centuries designed and wove tartans for the British Army. The Wilsons were often asked by Clan chiefs to deisgn a Clan tartan for them. The last mill closed in 1924. A train station was opened in 1852 that closed in 1949.

The continued expansion of Stirling and Bannockburn has resulted in Stirling and Bannockburn forming a contiguous conurbation. With the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1975, Bannockburn became part of Stirling district council and effectively part of Stirling.

BANNOCKBURN CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1830-1968

A local doctor, William Buchanan, gave a lecture on the co-operation. This led to a committee being established and rules drawn up based on the Glasgow Co-operative rules. In November 1830 a meeting of potential members was held, with 49 people joining the society, which was called Bannockburn Co-operative Society from the beginning. Members could only hold one share, the shares being £1 each. The shares could be bought with 1s down and the rest paid up at no less than 1d per week. A minimum payment of 5s was required to recived a share of the profits and to vote. Members shoping elsewhere were subject to a fine of between 1s and 2s.

The society first considered paying a dividend on purchases in 1859 but did not agree to do this until 1865.

The society joined the SCRS in 1968
