Ardrossan developed from about 1750 as a port for exporting coal and pig iron to Europe and North America. A railway station was opened in 1831. The town also developed as a ferry port - the ferry service to Arran has run since 1834, a ferry service ran to Belfast from about 1863 to 1976, a ferry service ran to the Isle of Man from 1892 to 1985. To accomodate these ferry services the twon harbour had multiple piers and in 1840 the railway wa extended to the harobour.
Shipbuilding was carried out in the 18th century and by the late 19th century the town also had a shipyard building fishing vessels and small cargo boats. This yard operated until the 1950s.
ARDROSSAN CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1870-1971
The society was started in 1870. It closed in 1971.
