Ardrossan developed from about 1750 as a port for exporting coal and pig iron to Europe and North America. A railway station was opened in 1831. The town also developed as a ferry port - the ferry service to Arran has run since 1834, a ferry service ran to Belfast from about 1863 to 1976, a ferry service ran to the Isle of Man from 1892 to 1985. To accomodate these ferry services the twon harbour had multiple piers and in 1840 the railway wa extended to the harobour. | |||
