Arbroath was originally known as Aberbrothock. From about 1750 to about 1850 the longer name fell out of common usage.

Arbroath made significant improvements to the harbour in 1839 and encouraged fishing vessels to be based out of Arbroath. This led to a Arbroath becoming a substantial fishing port. Arbroath also established a reputation for jute and sailcloth manufacture - by 1875 there were 14000 looms in 34 mills. Arbroath also established a reputation in shoemaking and, with Alexander Shanks, for lawnmower making.

The fishing quota cuts from 1980 led to a decline of Arbroath as a fishing port. However Arbroath remains a fish processing centre, with the fish landed elsewhere. Most of the manufacturing has declined.

Arbroath Equitable and High Street merged in early 1940 to form Arbroath United. In 1948 Arbroath United, Arborath Friendly Coal and West Port merged to form Arbroath. This society merged with South Angus in 1974 to form East Angus.

ARBROATH EQUITABLE 1833-1940

Guthrie Port Association was formed in 1833. It decided to enroll under the Industrial and Friendly Societies Act as the Arboath Equitable Society, with the first meeting under this name in December 1865. Throughout it's life it was known by both names in the local press. Guthrie Port Association (i.e. the official name before 1865) issued checks and Arbroath Equitable continued to do so. The checks were for the value of the goods purchased with a dividend being declared. In 1868 the society agreed to unite with West Port Association, but West Port voted against the amalgamation. The Society merged with High Street in early 1940 to form Arbroath United.

ARBROATH UNITED BUTCHER MEAT 1895-1897

The society was formed in 1895. In 1897 the Arbroath Equitable, High Street and West Port co-operatives met to discuss improving support for this society. At the January 1899 meeting the society declared its first profit and later that year was advertising that it had 4 shops. However at the January 1900 meeting it was declaring over 10% drop in sales and complaining of lack of support. In March the society was calling for customers to settle accounts and in September 1900 it stop trading.
