Abernethy is an ancient farming town located at the mouth of the river Nethy, where it enters the River Tay. Before the reformation of 1560 had a monastory. Abernethy had a train station in 1848 with the station closing in 1955.

The society was formed in 1853. It appears to have been initially known as Abernethy Wheaten Bread Society<ref>Perthshire Advertiser, 30 Jul 1857, page 1</ref> at registered as Abernethy Baking Society. The society was known as Abernethy Co-operative Society by the late 1890s<ref>Dundee Courier, 07 Jan 1898, page 7</ref>.


The society was formed in 1853.
In 1920 it was reported that the committee was depleted and that the society was considering joining to [[Perth Co-operatives|Perth]]<ref>Perthshire Advertiser, 21 Aug 1920, page 3</ref>. The society got in a dispute with an local man they had employed as an apprentice baker who had interupted his apprenticeship to serve in WW1<ref>Perthshire Advertiser, 14 Oct 1922, page 4</ref>. He left his apprenticeship because he believed he was intitled to £2 5s but only got 13s. He returned and was dismissed before his apprenticeship had expired. The Scottish Baker's Industrial Council found in favour of teh baker but the society refused to re-instate him. This resulted in the baker taking the society to court with the society losing on appeal. The society voted to go into volountary liquidation in October 1923<ref>Perthshire Advertiser, 10 Oct 1923, page 5</ref>

ABERNETHY CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1853-1923

In 1920 it was reported that the committee was depleted and that the society was considering joining to Perth[3]. The society got in a dispute with an local man they had employed as an apprentice baker who had interupted his apprenticeship to serve in WW1[4]. He left his apprenticeship because he believed he was intitled to £2 5s but only got 13s. He returned and was dismissed before his apprenticeship had expired.
