I'd love to hear about your LP collection.  I have no idea of greater Indian LPs.  Do you digitize them for playing?
But, I worry that my curiosity will lead us off target and that Figleaf will step in and split the posts and send some of this to the living room giving me a dizzy spell and a headache that even a cup of chai will not cure.
But,
if you do take this up in the living room as a separate post, and
if I somehow get alerted to it,
I would look forward to hearing about it.
As for what makes a good collection of Indian coins?  Now there's another noble topic!!!!
On that score, I'm still learning.  How about you Amit?  Abhay?  I know focus and quality count for a lot.  And obviously passion and interest.
There are no inherent rules. We get to create our own.
which appeal to you?
1. collecting by date,
2. by mint
3. by type
4. by ruler
5. by geographical location
6. by metal
7. by design
8. by language
9. by size
10. by century
11. by mint mark
12. by denomination? or token?
13. by method of manufacture?
and there's more.
for example: a collection that shows the history of the "rupee". We once had a series of posts about this, but I can't find it.  :(

Was this the thread you were looking for, Richie?

What's wrong with discussing LPs in the living room, btw? More people may see it.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I think LP should be in living room. Umm.. On upcoming days... A motor bike to buy, lesser coins, more time for research, disconnected internet at mobile, only net at officeroom, lesser frequency on WoC.

While irregular shaped hand struck coins have their own facination and appeal, what appeals to me the most is the uniformity of machine struck coins by type.

Those who are fans to variety of rupees I have a question to ask. If Type I and type IV (reverse) can be accepted as two varieties, then why not type II of 1862 and that II of 1880 to 1886 bombay mint? I find significant difference in the lotus.

Rupee varieties are an interesting subject and something I am looking at now. Given that in Roman coins the lengths that people go to to differentiate is quite extraordinary very little is done with Rupees.

We have ruler, date (two) and mint, then there is inscription. But what if you have the same words but in different positioning and where the date is placed changes? The question becomes of course, are these different varieties?

Well I believe they are and will be doing some experimenting on recording of these things a little later in the year.

I think i payed 7-10 Euros for common VF British India rupee types and 12-18 Euros for common hammered Rupees (Mughal and princely states).
But that was 6-12 months ago, before the great silver rush.

Price was pretty reasonable here too before the silver price hike. I used to buy a BI Rupee @ 7-8 and Bengal sultanate @ 8-10 Euros. Now I pay almost double.

Recently asked a dealer about the price of William set of 1,1/2 and 1/4 rupee, he quoted a sum of 16,000 to 20,000 rupee depending on grade.. It is a right price?? I don't have the william set unfortunately!!! 20,000 rupee is  lot of money!!! ???

I made my last purchase of coins in June, haven't even bought coins in base metal. There are some coins in my wishlist (really huge!) but I don't think I'll buy them before September / October..But that hasn't affected my interest in coins. Coins being posted here give me same pleasure as my own coins do. :)

Yap. Coin is such a madness that is not easy to cure. I collect coins from my childhood. I collected a quarter anna of 1907 when I was in primary school. Now I have givena pause in purchasing expensive silver coins. But I don't forget to give a close look at every circulating coins that I receive as change everyday. Yesterday my father teased me saying you are looking at coins as if you are looking for touch stones. Yes I know, though it is not my name, I am paisapagal too.
