I have certainly learned much from you about manhole covers.
Anyway, here's an image of a man using a manhole cover to cover his man hole.

Japanese Manhole Covers

In Japan they don't like anything to be boring, even manhole covers. Check out this collection of designs from around the country.

Cheers ;D

Start looking and you find the most amazing things. Here are Dutch manhole covers from the Southern town of Maastricht and the Northern town of Leeuwarden. The lovers in the park go well in a Burgundian place that loves fun, while the mystical conch with its semi-religious connection fits austere Leeuwarden.

The Japanese manhole-with-a-man looks good. I just hope that nobody stumbles there. :) The one in Leeuwarden refers to the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, I guess ...

WOW. What wonderful manhole covers!  I had no idea such things existed.

These two are from New York City. There is a long history of alligator sightings in the sewer systems of New York, and not the sculptural kind.

I had never imagined that the Manhole covers could be so much interesting. Here in India, all you see is just plain Cast Iron or concrete covers.

Thanks, Richie, for this wondeful topic.

I too never imagined such things.  Man hole covers...non utilitarian...artistic....who would have thought it.  I have never seen one in person that wasn't utilitarian.  I was interested in them because they are mostly cast and metal casting is a subject that interest me.
Collecting them?  I never imagined.

By comparison, collecting anvils doesn't seem so strange   ;D

Found two more on the net, both around Himeji castle. Aren't they something?

Here's a rather attractive Celtic-style Irish water-supply cover from Inis Mór, Aran Islands, Co. Galway.

Uisce is 'water' in Irish, whence our word 'whisky' (uisce beatha = water of life).

While I was in Berlin this weekend (World Money Fair), I also came across this manhole cover. The regular ones in the city are, well, kind of plain. :) But some are nicely designed, featuring various "landmarks" such as the Brandenburg Gate or the TV Tower. Detailed view (about 4 MB) here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7r89z4qkkxf6nau/2014-02-06%2014.25.53.jpg

A souvernir of our WoC meeting in Madrid last year. Not sooo spectacular, but I like the city arms showing a little bear at a strawberry tree.

At last a piece for the "square coin man".  ;)
