Here in the UK there has been a lot of man hole & drain covers stolen for their scrap value, driving around in Worcestershire a few months ago there were traffic cones to mark where the covers were taken & I can't imagine how dangerous it would be driving at night  & not spotting the hole. The police have issued warnings to scrap merchants who take in these stolen covers that will face severe penalties. According to Wiki it's a worldwide problem & even concrete replacements are stolen to get the reinforcing metal inside  :o

Stealing man hole cover is a very bad, I have heard "stories" of people dropping in. When I was young I recall my mother telling me to watch them very carefully, and don't even walk on them, in case one was loose!

Simply mindblowing . Who could have thought to include manhole covers in "Collectibles" or "Antiques". Superb!!

So that's why those Indian voices are so hard to understand on those call centre sites, they are speaking from the depths below New York when I thought they were in India!

Perhaps this collection could now move to Historical artifacts other than coins???

Looking at the two links Gerard has provided, I'm getting a feeling that collecting manhole covers is actually a hobby in that part of the world?!?
