I have a number of these French India Rupees for Pondicherry, struck at Arcot  KM#15
I just noticed the peculiar date on this one,  I think it's supposed to read as A.H. 1219 & although the 1 is off the flan the remaining numbers appear as r.i.p because presumably the die cutter put the 9 back to front  ;D

Spooky! I am very fond of such quirks, turning a coin into something special. Also, that is a wonderfully sharp, well struck coin.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

It is isn't it!, I have 12 of these rupees altogether of various dates as shown in one of my first ever posts on this forum  ,some have shroff marks & drill holes, but most are in an UNC condition bought all those years ago from Major Mahbert & hence some are slightly fire blackened but nevertheless extremely attractive coins

French-India, Arcot-rupee i.n.o. Shah Alam II, date 1219/Ry.44 (retrograde 9 in date), despite the mint name on the coin they were struck at Pondicherry. Ref.: KM#15.

Is this a recorded variation in the date numeral 9?

Not that I am aware of, but such discrepancies so often appear that I don't think it is really worth to mention all these minor errors.
