This particular coin(?) was listed on ebay for years altogether till last week when some unfortunate buyer fell for it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item5d2bc5b934&item=400166336820&nma=true&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&rt=nc&si=WmtKpSs7j9MO77gezFwftMpQBSw%253D#ht_2541wt_905

The seller states in the auction "...but we cannot gurantee the authenticity of this coin as we are not an expert in such early gold coins, even though looks genuine to us..." and still the buyer went for it!! :o

Bimat

The same seller is having one more identical item for sale. ::)

My own rule is that never buy from a seller who keeps his feedback profile 'private'.

Poor Guy, I remember one such replica coin was sold by Toddywala auction sometimes back, and the price was a little over the gold price prevailing at that time.

Even I have this coin in my collection. When I purchased this coin, the dealer told me that this is a genuine coin, but the asking price was a little over the prevailing gold price. So I knew, that this could not be a genuine piece. The original coin should cost about 18000 dollars as per the latest catalogue.

where is it saying 15 rupees?

During the East India Period, 1 Mohur was equivalent to 15 rupees. So, a mohur or 15 rupee was one and the same thing.

Oesho

There were two types of the European style gold mohurs.
The first one as shown above dated 1765 (Pridmore 4).
The next issue was dated 1770 and had the value of 15 Rup.s engraved on it. The obverse shows a Persian legend in the name of Alamgir II, dated AH1184/Ry.9 (Pridmore 7).

The new listing has been reported. The lister's attempt at saying he is unsure of whether the coin is genuine or not does not excuse the asking price and the suggestion that the coin is circulated is a basic misleading statement.

It violates the listing rules of ebay and we will see what happens.

The ebay defence on this one is rather intresting. They have invited me to phone them in America to discuss the problem.

Given the cost I have invited them to phone me on the problem. My next level of escalation will start in 26 hours.

Would you like me to place a telephone call for you?  I have some cell phone minutes I could dedicate to your cause.

Just looking at the sellers feedback & seeing 34 negatives in 12 months should be more than enough to put people off, even more bizarre is that when you read the feedback complaints you see the reply by worldcurrencyandcoin  is accusations of 'criminal minds at work' by all their customers :o

Well the serious business starts tonight (or today US time) This is an absolute trial case for actions against ebay who allow sellers like this to prosper.

The steps are interesting  but we have a way to travel on this. This is a big ticket big dollar gain con. Not many of these are this big so it is a set for an interesting run.

I fervently wish you well and I hope you will be able to prove me wrong on my scepticism. May justice prevail over cynical commercialism.

My advisor on this is one of the top internet law people in the world. And we have a state government department neding some publicity here.

Our chances of winning this round are quite slim but the shot across the bows will not go unseen. I fervantly hope they ban me from ebay. SCOTUS then gets a run.
