Here is a clickable index of the tramway and bus tokens in this thread. For a discussion of the material these tokens are made of, see this post and the following one.

Issuers are as indicated on the token. NV stands for no denomination indicated. Non-monetary denominations (one journey, value as indicated etc.) are not reflected in the table. Shades of colours are often not indicated, as they may or may not have been caused by external effects, such as wear, dirt, washing, sunshine. We are always looking for missing diameters and weights (metal tokens only). For better overview, the table has been split. This should not affect the links.

Here is a token for Bournemouth's St John Ambulance brigade's use.

Malcolm

I can't figure out how these would have been used Malcolm.

One possibilty - just used like normal tokens.... and the St. John's Ambulance Brigade bit could just be an advertisement....

Well the Smith catalogue for such pieces only lists four tokens for Bournemouth - this is one of them and the other three are the same but with different colour and denomination.

Otherwise....   this local authority for some odd reason (though not to say impossible) decided to give all local St. John's Ambulance Brigade members some subsidy on the local transport network.... and maybe they would have had to have been in uniform to be allowed to use the tokens.....

I did not check every relevant page in the book for this - but I have not previously noticed such an issue for any of the other areas....

I think my second theory is more likely to be correct than my first.

Someone somewhere will know the answer....

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

The concessionary tokens were issued to the likes of Policemen, postmen and St. John's Ambulance Brigade members for use only when in uniform.

From The First Dictionary of Paranumismatica edited by Brian Edge, John Tolson tells us....

'Tokens in Britain were not normally issued to the general public, but to municipal and government employees, schools and large companies, so that free or subsidised travel could be provided to and from school or work, or in the case of postmen, policemen and other public employees while on duty. Although tokens could be used to buy tickets, abuse of the subsidy could be avoided as they could not be readily converted into cash or used to buy goods.'

Several local authorities issued special tokens such as these, also private companies; Rolls Royce comes to mind. [Smith Derby240PA; and highly sought after according to the price quoted there.]
