Algerian railway token ?
« on: November 11, 2014, 09:58:38 PM »
I am not sure. Is this piece a transportation token or a truck token for the workers at the railway construction site?

It looks like the Gregori family had a workshop on the third lot of an industrial area in Aïn-Fekan in Algeria where they made or repaired locomotives, used i.a.  on the railroad line from Sidi Bel Abbes to Tizi. The three places are close together in Mascara province. I found the names of two Gregori boys on a list of persons reported missing in 1962, which is a sad indication that they were pied-noirs, French settlers in Algeria.

One mystery is the denomination. It is too high for a café or restaurant token. My best guess is that it would be good for a rather large glass of beer. A train ticket sounds OK also. The hole is not to make it wearable (it's in the wrong place), so might it be a cancellation?

PM: fils = son or sons. Maybe the father of the two boys mentioned above...

On March 29, 1914 the Jacques Gregori company ( from Algiers ) won a contract to build a part of the railroad between Sidi Bel Abbes and Tizi Ouzou ( Algeria ) : the contract was for earthwork, bridges, etc ...
This part was the " lot 3 " : see the map ( sorry, at this time, maps were hand written ! )

I think that these necessity tokens  were used by the workers to buy products in the company stores, probably located near the yards.

Ce nom de famille me semble pourtant pas très commun (agrandir pour voir l'Algérie).

Yet, this family name seems uncommon.
