Gwalior sunface Quarter Annas: Varieties
« on: April 22, 2011, 09:39:49 PM »
Here is another scarce coin from my collection, at first glance you might think it's from Indore state & not Gwalior.

Quarter Anna 25mm Madho Rao,  Samvat era 1946    c.1890AD

The coin has a planchet error

KM 168.1, I think. Haven't seen it before. I believe the clip occurred when the planchets were punched out of the plate: a slight overlap of holes.

There are 4 varieties of 1/4 Anna Sunface Coin of Gwalior - 2 with 16 pointed star, 1 with 17 pointed star and the last one with 18 pointed star. While it is still easier to see the 16 pointed star coins, I have never seen the coins with 17 and 18 pointed star.

The present market price of these 16 pointed star coins is about 17500 rupees.

The 2 varieties of 16 pointed star coins that I have in my collection, are shown here for comparision - one has a narrow and pointed nose, while the other has a broad nose. Even the shape of the star is different.

Dear Abhay, You didn't see a sunface with 17, resp. 18 rays. Therefore I will upload a few others of the Gwalior 'sunface' 1/4 anna's.
a) Quarter anna VS.1944, with circular legend around sunface. KM#165
b) Quarter anna VS.1944, with 18 rays around the sunface. KM#166
c) Quarter anna VS.1945, with 17 rays arond the sunface. KM#167
d) Half pice VS.1946, much more rare as the 1/4 anna issues. KM#162
e) Half pice VS.1946 punched from a 1/4 anna to be used as blank for the 1/2 pice type KM#164.
f) Half pice VS.1958 (KM#164), struck over a punched 1/4 anna (VS.1946). Sunrays are still visible on the obverse.

Dear Oesho,

Thanks a lot for showing the pictures. It is really strange that you don't see these coins in Gwalior also. I have been seeing lots of other Gwalior coins being found in and around Gwalior, but never came across these coins.

We still miss an image of a one pie and a half anna, both dated VS.1946. The pie and half anna are in the British museum and I have only seen another half anna VS.1946 in trade. So these are extremely rare.

I never knew that 1/2 Anna was so rare. I do have 1/2 anna in my collection. :) :) :)

Great Abhay, this is just the third specimen I have seen. It's a real gem.
When we can manage to get a scan of a one pie VS.1946, the whole series will be complete on WoC.
