Design Contest: "10 Years of Euro Cash"
« on: March 31, 2011, 07:48:35 PM »
Next year the euro area member states of the EU will issue a common 2 commemorative coin dedicated to "10 years of euro cash". http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,8439.0.html

The design of these pieces will be based on a public competition: "January 2012 marks 10 years since the introduction of euro banknotes and coins. To celebrate this, all euro area Member States will issue a commemorative circulation coin in 2012, bearing a common design on the national side. (...) If you are a citizen of an EU Member State whose currency is the euro and you are at least 12 years old by the end of 2011, you can submit your design proposal via this website." http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/articles/euro/2011-03-31-euro-coin-comp_en.htm

At present there is just an announcement on that page, that is, you cannot enter your own design yet. But that should come soon. So in late April/early May you can submit a design, then "a professional jury" will pick a selection. Finally, in June, people in the euro area can vote for the design they like best.

The "Freundeskreis Medaillenkunst" in Berlin will discuss this common 2 coin on Tuesday, 3 May, at the mint in Berlin. The members of that club (which is a section of the Berlin Numismatic Society) are invited to talk about the contest and its conditions, but also to present their suggestions if they already have any. Don't know whether others can come too; a pre-registration is required. More information in German is at http://www.smb.museum/ngb/event.php?event_id=362

You now have another 10 days to submit your design. :) Proposals will be accepted until 20 May 2011.

Some more info about the conditions (abridged version of the terms listed at the competition website):
* If you want to participate, you need to a citizen of a euro area country. Minimum age is 12 (see first post).
* The design is to illustrate the single currency and its benefits, or an aspect thereof, either symbolically or otherwise.
* Your design may be accompanied by a short explanatory text (max. 300 characters).
* The design is limited to the inner part (pill) of the obverse.
* A space for the name of the issuing member state needs to be left blank.
* Also keep in mind that "2002-2012" should be part of the design.
* The design may not include the name "euro" or any other text; the euro symbol may be used though.

Submit your proposal here http://www.eurocoin-competition.eu/ once you're done. :)

In the end I did not bother trying to con people that I was a citizen of a Euro member country. But the reality is the design brief inspired me less than a dead dog.

Is there public vote for this coin, and when is it? I'd like to see some of the designs, i get the feeling the winner will be a dull boring drab affair if there is no vote.

I have not been impressed with either of the other common designs!

Did you see the last sentence of my initial post? ;) Yes, that vote is part of the process.

Voting starts on Monday. Then again, the previous design was also picked in a public vote. (What was new this time was the open design competition.) So you may not like the result of this year's vote either ...

It says that only people in the Euro area can vote, hmm, i can be in the Euro area quite easily, that is what VPNs and proxies are for!  ;D

Great. This way, we in Euroland can always say (if some awkward design wins) that the vote was manipulated by those from outside the euro area. ;D

Actually we are now in the preselection phase. I don't know how many designs were submitted, but keep in mind that various bodies and people are involved in the process of narrowing the number of "candidates" down. Ultimately we will be able to choose from five designs ...

I think it would be much better to have more than five designs. At least 20, with a alternative voting system might be good. Though if I can be in Europe for this vote, i'm sure people could easily vote 100 times through different proxies and things like that!

Now we have the five finalists. The designs, and some info regarding the vote, are here:

Let's discuss the five in that other topic. :)

Now where should we present and discuss the designs that did not make it into the "Final Five" round? I came across the first one today but think that some more will sooner or later show up. So maybe we can deal with the finalists in the Euro Coins topic, this could be used for the other designs.

Here is one, from the MyEuroHobby website, that was not picked for the public vote. What I find particularly interesting is that it uses the "butterfly" idea too. The explanation sounds somewhat plausible - just as a butterfly is a caterpillar first, the euro was a "non-cash" currency in the three initial years. Well, it would make sense to somehow show the metamorphosis. But let's just assume that the euro symbol consists of three caterpillars. ;)

Nice design, but it doesn't create depth.

I am sorry also, Frizio. I especially like the "common path" design. Good symbolism.
