DE: €2 Commem Designs 2013-2015
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:30:29 AM »
In a previous topic we dealt with the commemorative €2 coins that Germans has issued and will issue from 2010 to 2012. Now the designs of the three next issues (2013 to 2015) have been picked. The pieces will honor the following German states:

2013: Baden-Württemberg (BW)
2014: Niedersachsen (NI; Lower Saxony)
2015: Hessen (HE; Hesse)

The jury also recommended minor modifications, such as the size of the "D" (which is used instead of the "DE" as a country identifier on these coins) and the mintmark. But basically the following images show what the coins will look like.

The Baden-Württemberg design is not exactly new - see this topic. The artist who won this contest is Eugen Ruhl from Pforzheim. A larger image of the design is here.

This coin will probably be issued on 1 February 2013. The other €2 commem from Germany in that year is part of a joint French-German issue dedicated to the Elysée Treaty - see here.

In 2014 the Lower Saxony coin will be issued. It shows St. Michael's in Hildesheim.

The designer of this piece is Erich Ott from Munich. A larger image is here.

In 2015 the state of Hesse will be honored. That €2 coin will show the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, a church that is primarily known for its political history. This place was, in 1848, the seat of the first democratic German parliament, the National Assembly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulskirche,_Frankfurt

Heinz Hoyer from Berlin was the winner of that design contest. A larger image can be viewed here.

In another topic we just talked about "First Strike" ceremonies that take place at a time when the actual pieces have already been produced. Well, in Baden-Württemberg they actually have them before the "regular" coins are made. ;)

(Edit) That link is no longer active, sorry. Here is another article about Eugen Ruhl ...

Ah very interesting.... I visited this church when I was in Frankfurt am a few years ago... But for some reason kaiserdom has stuck in my head... Now I can't recall if that's just another name or indeed another church... In any case, a must have for me :)

Different church. :)  The Kaiserdom is the church where, in the times of the Holy Roman Empire, the king of the HRE was usually elected (and, in later years, crowned too). Once the Pope crowned that king, he would become emperor (Kaiser), hence Kaiserdom.

By the way, the German "Dom", Italian "duomo" etc. is a term for a cathedral, not just its dome. Also, several major churches in Germany are called "Kaiserdom" - Speyer, Aachen, etc.

Now I'm pretty sure it was the kaiserdom I visited and not St Pauls. I'd get the coin in anycase as I'm far too deep into collecting €2 commems that it would eat me up to have a hole in my collection now. Perhaps they'll issue a kaiserdom coin another time

Next year Germany will issue two commemorative €2 coins again. While the "End of the Iron Curtain" (1989-2014) is apparently not a relevant theme for the federal government, the somewhat arbitrarily picked date of the unification one year later will be. The coin will thus commemorate 25 Years of German Unity.

As with the Elysée Treaty coin last year, there was no design competition. The government simply picked a design that had won the second prize (in a competition for a €10 collector coin) five years earlier. ;) So next year's commem, to come in January 2015, will be designed by Bernd Wendhut. Total mintage 30 million; as usual the coin will be produced by all mints.

This image (attached below) shows the plaster model that Bernd Wendhut submitted for the 2010 collector coin. A slightly modified version of the image side (left) will now be used for next year's commemorative coin.

Both 2015 coins (Hessen and Unity) will be issued on 30 January. That is the opening day of the World Money Fair, but of course the pieces can be had at all Bundesbank branch offices (and various commercial banks) throughout the country.

Just received the German Unity piece in change. It looks so pristine I wonder if it was planted and by whom. Or maybe I have become to frenchified, seeing government plots everywhere. The space effects work well, even on such a relatively small surface.

The edge text EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT gave this old cold warrior a chill.
