2) Sachin Tendulkar                          Cricketer

I like the idea of US state quarters, too. We have such a great history, great people, beautiful places..but our government is more interested in showing corrupt politicians on coins (in most of the cases)..

A series of bimetallic coins showing historical monuments in each Indian state (or anything which is cultural symbol of the state) would be great. Isn't it? 8)

Sigh. It won't happen.. :'(

Also, I don't think Sachin or Dr. Kalam will appear on Indian coins any time soon. We don't show portraits of living personalities on coins..

Does anyone know is there any official legislation on when a dead personality be depicted on a coin (or for that matter if a living one can?)

We certainly had living monarchs depicted before independence! The effigies of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi appeared on coins almost as soon as they had died.

To my best knowledge a president has to be dead for 2 years before being depicted on a coin, though they have had living personalities on coins in the past.

The US idea of State Quarters was good but the depictions on many was not and there are only a handful which are not uninspiring!

Sorry to be off-topic in my previous post. I would really like to see the architecture of India being depicted in a series. They can consider the Thanjavur temple issue as the first in the series.  :) I have no doubt the Taj Mahal coin will be a big hit both nationally and internationally. I would love to have a large size Rs 100 coin depict this.

I know that Mother Teresa was honoured with a postage stamp as soon as she got the peace prize years before she died.

But in my opinion, we should wait for 2-3 years after a personality passes away. This is called a cooling off period. This is required for objective assessment of achievements of person. You might be aware that Roman Catholics do not grant sainthood immediately after death.

My second argument against coins for living person is very strong. Our sundry politicians will misuse it to hv their own coins at expense of GOI.When election comes, there will be mad scramble to issue such coins in name of non deserving politicians.

It wl make life hell for collectors

Btw:All of you must be aware of a lady politician of northen India who is fond of installing her statues in parks.

If she comes to power in Delhi, we will surely see first indian coins on living persons

Not much difference between the two.........may be the elephant would look more elegant.

In that case issued coins will be for sale at very high premium due to "extra rare error"

Why ? here is ans : Both Observe & Reverse will be with two different elephants  ;D

I would like to see simple , elegant coins with lot of improvement in design & quality.

Cheers ;D

I think that rule applies only to US coins? If I'm not wrong, back in 2007 when USA decided to honor their presidents on $1 coins, the American senate made this law regarding which presidents could be a part of it. And that's exactly the reason why Obama/George Bush will not appear on $1 coins in 2017 (unless something happens with them before 2015 >:D)

Is there any similar law in India?

I will not be surprised if the 'lady' comes to power in Delhi and changes our national emblem from 4 lions to 4 elephants. BTW there are many such 4 headed elephants in her park in NOIDA.
