Canadian Mint unveils new Royal Family coins, minus Kate

Kate Middleton may be marrying into the Royal Family, but she has yet to join the clan on coins. For now, numismatists with a royal bend will have to be satisfied with three new coins the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled on Tuesday.

The sterling silver coins feature the likenesses of Prince William, Prince Harry and Prince Charles.

There will only be 10,000 copies made of each coin in the "Continuity of the Crown" series, each with a face value of $15.

What's with all the men, you say? Where are the women of the Royal Family?

Don't worry, the Mint is going to be cashing in with those coins later in the year. It has plans to release a set of coins in May celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. As well, it will soon unveil designs commemorating Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding.

The wedding coins will feature "an eye-catching technological feature," according to the Mint.

"Royal themes have always been very popular on Royal Canadian Mint coins and ultra-high relief portraits of the immediate successors to Queen Elizabeth II on the Mint's newest silver collector coins are an excellent way to support this tradition," Ian E. Bennett, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, said in a release.

Oh really? Wow, a photo - yes, that is indeed a great new feature. By the way, the original photo was apparently taken in Salzburg, Austria, in 2008.
