Agreed, it is nothing but a rumor. Then again, when I post such "news" which I do not have any official source for, I do mention that it's only that.

And then, in this particular case, a small portion of wishful thinking is involved. :D  I would not mind that Fifth Republic design being replaced by something better ...

Have seen the design of that Presidency coin here http://www.e-monnaies.fr/zoom/presidence.htm but I really really hope that it was just a joke. (Where's that "puke" smilie when you need it ...) And sorry, frizio, your visualization, though nicely done, does not make it better. Not your fault, I know.

Some sources are asserting that the design for the French 2 euro commerative 2008 was made by Prof. Guido Veroi. Which I am finding very hard to believe.
As a rule the coin designs made by Veroi (several Vatican City coins and one series for San Marino) are very nice and decidedly unlike this French eyesore.

French designer Starck mints new euro coins
Fri Jun 27, 2008 1:32pm EDT  (Reporting by Brian Rohan; Editing by Ibon Villelabeitia)

PARIS (Reuters) - French designer Philippe Starck, creator of chic hotels, high-tech lamps and modernistic furniture, turned his hand to the world of hard currency with the design of a new euro coin to mark France's EU presidency.

Inside a workshop at the French Mint Coin Museum in Paris, Starck and Finance Minister Christine Lagarde operated a hulking machine to mint the first run.

The two euro coins are stamped with the year 2008 and the initials of the French republic, which takes up the 27-member EU's six-month rotating presidency on July 1.

Famous for interiors that included the private apartments of former Socialist President Francois Mitterrand, and products such as the spider-like Juicy Salif fruit juicer, Starck also developed inexpensive collections for American retailer Target.

The 20 million new coins will go into circulation on July 1 and be valid currency in the 15 euro zone countries as well as other areas where the euro is used.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I still don't like the design. Must admit, however, that it does represent the sober mood in the EU which is likely to dominate the French presidency. Sure, that was not the intention of the designer. But as there isn't much to celebrate, why not issue a coin that makes a plain statement and nothing else ...

A better pic of the actual coin doesn't make it look any better, alas. :'( :'(

A3v1,
That's a very nice coin design, even though it is only representing the French Presidency of the E.U. instead of the 50th. Anniversary of the 5th. Republic though.

@ Aidan,
Sorry to disagree with you. It is not a nice design, it it not even a design at all.
All it is is a piece of information in printing type.
It will enter history as the least attractive eurocoin of the era. >:D

Did you know that there is an "officially colored" version of the Presidency coin? Apparently the government had an extra 5,000 coins made, with the obverse in yellow. That version was given to government employees from what I have read, and a remainder of 400 coins ended up being sold by some dealers. No idea why anybody would be willing to pay roughly €100 for one of these ...

I think these were intentionally made, remember French mint also 'forgot' to add mint mark on Monegasque €1 coins in 2007, which helped a few dealers to make fortune out of it? >:(

The so called design of the coin is so terrible that even colored version of it couldn't make it more attractive. ;D

I agree indeed that it looks like crap. In fact these were minted on purpose. Maybe Christian can add the rest of the story too  ;)

In 2014 this was mentioned in various forums, here and there for example. (Sorry, the second link is apparently dead.) I had totally forgotten about the colored version until a few days somebody brought it up again: In that German forum there are (at least ;) ) two theories about who ordered these colored pieces. One: The Monnaie de Paris made them for the European Commission. Two: The French government had them made. Don't ask me what is right here - all I know that a poor design was made even worse, hehe.
