Yes, indeed this is a new type of set. If you notice, this is a PROOF coin from KOLKATA mint.

Previously, you must have seen UNC coin from HYDERABAD mint. (The Looks are just the same).

This Proof coin set was being sold at INDIPEX, through the stalls of SPMCIL, and was being sold for about Rs. 450.

Wasn't that unc (proof?) set available for 150 Rupees?  I didn't buy the Braille coin but did buy the Gur-Ta-Gaddi bimetallic for 250 rupees. Kolkata mint is becoming India's Pobjoy or Franklin mint it seems >:( At-least those foreign mints have nice quality control measures..

Dear Kansal,

Is there anything else that the mints sold there that we dont know about 1000 years coin card we know of.  anything else that was not offered on their website but sold just at exhibition.

I was completely blindsided by this.  Was the 150 rupees coin also sold individually?

Abhay

Dear Oracle,

The 5 Rupee Brihadeswarar Temple coin in Card Packing was the only other set that was sold at INDIPEX, which is not avaialable otherwise.

The following sets were being sold at INDIPEX:

1. Rabindarnath Tagore Proof Set
2. Commonwealth Games Proof Set
3. ONGC Proof Set
4. 60th Commonwealth of Nations Proof Set
5. Brihadeswarar Temple 5 Rupee Coin in Card Pack
6. 2 Rupee Braille Coin Proof

Dear Abhay,

Thanks so much for the information.  It is interesting to note that CWG set and 60 years of CW have not been sent to most collectors so that makes 4 out of 6 items that the collectors have not seen.  Clearly a case of misplaced priorities.  There are unconfirmed reports of a high price rise for the temple set.  If those are also found to be true then the mint will be seen taking the capitalistic route with gutso.

Another thing that can become a major headache is the plan to use 90% silver blanks for the 1000 Rs coins.  I wonder if they will have a hallmark test for silver  ::) if the mint mixes the blanks we might have a whole new string of errors  ::)

Should be different diameter coins.

Dear Oracle & Amit

As far as I am aware. Tanjavour temple will not have 92% silver but only 80%

Dear Sanjay,

So the coins wont be sterling silver then it will be even more difficult to identify.  Lets hope the coins are of a different diameter although from the pics of the vip set it doesn't look that way.

Figleaf

I don't think you will see the difference between 80% and 92% silver. Only when silver content goes below something like 60% will the difference be visible and even then, mostly when the coin has been in circulation for a while.

well i havent really compared indian coins so i dont know but i have compared the 1970 coin to the American coins and its pretty easy to tell.  well we will have a field day if they cant distinguish the blanks or it might be the beginning of another scam

heaven help us ::)
