Massive Coin Theft Uncovered at Mint of Finland
published 16th September 2010

The Helsinki Criminal Police are investigating a suspected robbery of tens of thousands of euros in coins from the Mint of Finland.

Police say that the money was pilfered in the form of coins of one and two euros.

Police have detained several people, including the production chief of the mint.

Police are also investigating suspicions that the use and distribution of cocaine might also be involved.

The Mint of Finland, a state-owned company, produces ordinary coins as well as commemorative coins and medals.

Hopefully the stolen coins aren't the Estonian euro coins ;)  :D

I checked the Finnish press as far as I could. They all mention the denomination, but not the type. When they have coin pictures, they show the common side, not the national side. I guess they don't know.

The story is pretty weird also in the sense that stealing coins is highly inefficient: coins are very low value and very heavy as well as hard to spend in large quantity. I hope there will be more news about this case, explaining such "details".

Just came across this article in German which has a few more details. (Forget about the image; those are stock photos.) Seems the theft was not a one-time "event" but occurred over a period of a year and a half.

Prison Sentences for Mint Coin Thefts
31-12-2010

The former production manager of the Mint of Finland has been sentenced to one year and seven months imprisonment. The Helsinki District Court found him guilty of the aggravated theft of coins valued at 161,000 euros during an 18-month period.

The former manager was also ordered by the court to reimburse around 121,000 euros to the state.
Three other accused received suspended sentences of 11, seven and three months respectively for a variety of offences including concealment of stolen goods and money laundering. A fourth accomplice received a suspended sentence of 60 days' imprisonment for aiding and abetting.

Coins began disappearing from the Mint in April 2009. Police became aware of the thefts during house searches carried out in connection with other crimes. They discovered a large cache of stolen coins.
