Croatia is a perfectly good candidate. It is a prime tourist destination, so introducing the euro would have immediate benefits, in addition to external checks on its economic an fiscal policy. Personally, I'd like to see Bulgaria clean up its act first.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Until 15 July, people are allowed to vote on selected themes for the Croatian euro coins. The selected themes include the kuna (both the animal and the currency), chessboard pattern (as can be seen on the Croatian flag and coat of arms), the city of Dubrovnik, the Croatian map, and the Glagolitic script.

Some interesting design ideas there, thank you! What I find a little strange ... I did not see any info about how many different designs the coins would then have. Suggesting five themes does not really hint at eight  ;D but rather three. Hopefully not just one.

Three themes (1.: 1c, 2c, 5c; 2.: 10c, 20c, 50c; 3.: €1, €2) seems indeed likely. Perhaps four if €1 and €2 get different designs.

I hope the results aren't Split too much

Just to note that today marks the half way point of Bulgaria and Croatia being in ERM2 for two years.

#35
The official concept themes of the Croatian euro coin series have been announced:

1, 2 and 5 euro cents: Glagolitic motif.
10, 20 and 50 euro cents: Dedicated to Nikola Tesla
1 euro: Kuna motif
2 euro: Geographical map of Croatia

The chessboard pattern will be visible on all of the designs.

Instead of the City of Dubrovnik, they appear to have chosen to honour Nikola Tesla. I had sent in a suggestion to include Nikola Tesla, but not as an alternative for Dubrovnik.  :-\

Angus

Cool, thanks, what is the programme for the actual designs?

redlock

So, four designs as I had expected.

Now, we have to wait and see if it actually goes through. As I recall Latvia also had four designs intially. But they had to drop one. I can't recall if it was the one for the €1 coin or the one for the €2 coin. They ended up with one design for both denominations.

Edit:
The initial design for the €2 coin had to be dropped and the €2 coin got the same design as the €1 coin.

Adapting it would have worked too. But I suppose they realized that a redesign, this time with a proper circle of stars, would have made the depiction of the monument too small. ;) Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing the new Croatian designs!

I also fear that their plan to include the chessboard pattern on all coins, is going to make the designs way too busy.

What do you mean by 'had to be dropped'?  The €1 and €2 designs can be different.

Sure, of course they can. As for the Latvian designs, see here.

Pabitra

After Croatia, it is likely to be Bulgaria.
Did Bulgaria finalise this design in 2013-14?

chrisild

All I know is that Bulgaria plans to use the Madera Horseman on all (!) euro and cent denominations. (See this article from 2008.) Whether this particular design is in any way "official", or a third party idea based on the outcome of the vote ... sorry, no idea.
