RBI to issue new Rs 5 coin
Mumbai, Sept. 27

The Reserve Bank today announced it will shortly issue new Rs 5 coins with the theme "Connectivity and Information Technology".

The face of the 23-millimetre Ferritic Stainless Steel coins will be divided in three parts with two horizontal lines. The central portion will bear the "Lion Capitol" of Ashoka Pillar with "Satyamev Jayate" inscribed below. The top part will contain the word "Bharat" and "India", while the lower portion will bear the year.

On the other side of the coin, the lower periphery will contain two visual metaphors depicting the smooth fluid mass representing the ceaseless flow of information.

The existing five rupee coins will continue to be in circulation.

Hi Aidan,
I have been told by many collectors that Government has stopped its circulation, since it is very difficult to distinguish a 50 Paise coin and the above 5 Rupees coin. Its weight is far less than the that of normal 5 Rupees coins.Personally,I also don't like its design, which doesn't satisfy the theme-"Connectivity and Information Technology".

Aditya,
Did you get any of those 5 Rupees coins before the Government ordered them to cease circulating?

I haven't seen what the current 50 Paise coin looks like.

Aidan.

Aidan,
These coins are available in large quantities and even if they stop minting further coins (which I have ont heard of), I do not think that there will be a scarcity. These coins are currently easily available.
