Aurangzeb - Silver 1 Rupee - Gulkanda Mint, KM # 300.28
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:25:25 AM »
Recently, I got this silver 1 Rupee coin of Aurangzeb from a dealer. As per Dealer, this coin is from KABUL Mint, but when I compare this coin with that of other KABUL coins, it does not match.

I need the help to confirm the Mint of this Aurangzeb Coin. The Year on the coin is AH 1098.

Thanks in Advance.

Abhay

Dear Abhay, I replied somewhat in a haste. When I looked at it again, I realise that it has to be Gulkanda (ref.: KM#300.28)
Sorry for the error.

That place is significant in Dutch numismatic history. A VOC report says that in 1646  the Company got minting rights in Paliakate from the "king of Golconda".

Thanks for the change in attribution. I was about to when I saw the first reply and needed to go back and check on a few things.

The script for the mint on this is the alternate way of writing Gulkanda from what I have seen.

The more elegantly written way of Gulkanda is only observed for this date (AH1098/Ry.31) See: http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=30285http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=52624  The earlier and later coins of this mint show a slightly different way of inscribing Gulkanda.

Here are some more different ways of writing the mint name.
