Documenting my coins

Hi,
I have been collecting world coins for many years purely for the benefit of myself and the love of history. I think it is about time that i document all of my coins, would somebody please advise me on the best way to do this. Is there a download available.

I had downloaded a software sometime ago from internet but it wasn't a registered version so I did't have full access to all its functions. And anyway it wasn't worth buying and since I couldn't find the code to 'crack' the software, I unistalled it

But I have maintained a nice database of coins I have and my want-list in Microsoft Excel, Thanks to Bill Gates . It's very simple to use and maintain. The various functions (e.g. Filter) can be used to 'extract' the particular information if you want. I include following information when I add a new coin to the database:

Country-Denomination-Date-KM#-Condition-Composition-Comments-Diameter-Edge-Weight-Mint Mark-Mintage-Date of addition to the list

I also intend to add another column for 'Designer's name' but that will take considerable time now, I know

Glad to see you here, Alan. Welcome. This site is meant to be fun; I hope you'll enjoy yourself here.

I would agree with Aditya. No specialized software will do it the way you want it. Excel has the required flexibility. If you are not familiar with all the commands (MSHelp is pretty useless), you may want to consider investing in a book on Excel. Choose one with plenty practical examples. You learn fastest by exercise.

I completely agree.  Commercial coin collection software was written, it seems, by non-collectors.  I have settled on Access because of its enormous flexibility, although Excel seems to work for other collectors I know.  I tried it, but soon reverted to Access.  Does anyone remember Fox-Pro?  It came with nearly three shelf feet of 'instruction manual' and I got in all kinds of trouble trying to work it out.  If anyone is tempted - Don't!  Unless you are a computer and software specialist.

The excel file containing record of coins I have is almost up to date (I dare to call it 95% full proof) and I even maintain a want-list in excel(applies only to bimetallics),but my swap list was last updated a year ago or so It's embarrassing especially when a swapper with whom I'm trading coins has a nicely maintained swap-list..

I was trading with a German collector and he sent me his swaplist-4500 world coins for trade,each coin was individually graded and with other small details like mint mark

I maintain it in Excel, but i thought something of ready made would be quite easy and cosmetically good

There are few softwares available on internet but they all cost a minimum of $50 or so. And trial versions are crappy IMO.

I'd rather spend $50 for coins than that for the software..

I never tried such softwares except excel , I hearsay from many experienced collectors such softwares are not user friendly .
