CB to issue new currency notes
By Kelum Bandara, FRIDAY, 13 AUGUST 2010

The Central Bank has decided to issue a new series of currency notes in all denominations except the Rs.2,000 note, featuring major development projects of the government, a top official said yesterday. The Central Bank will print these notes to mark its 60th anniversary, and release them in March, next year.

A commemorative coin will also be minted to mark the event. Earlier, the Central Bank minted a new ten-rupee coin and released it for circulation while releasing a Rs.1,000 note featuring the war victory and the picture of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The new series of notes will be printed under the theme 'Economic Growth and Prosperity'.

The release of the new notes has been mentioned in the Central Bank's internal publication called 'Kavuluwa' as well.

However, when contacted a Central Bank official declined to give technical details in this regard fearing that unscrupulous elements would use such information to print counterfeit notes.
