Akbar, Dam, AH 1007, mint off.
« on: July 06, 2010, 09:38:15 AM »
The date (if it is the date) seems to read 007 (James Bond came much later!!!!!!!!). If it is 1007, this would be a coin of Akbar, a Dam weighing 19.8g. The other side seems to read (Zarb) Falus (copper Coin)? Am I correct with my reading? Is attribution possible?

Coin 488 on the plates from Nelson Wright Coins of the Indian Museum Volume 3 Mughal has a similar date reverse (?) but the obverse on yours is pretty tough to look at. Hmmm. Akbar.

Does it give any mint reference?

the date indeed will be AH1007. The mint is off the flan. Only part that can be read is Zarb Falus...

Does this coin look to be similar to this one attributed to Narnol?

As discussed here, the coins with the AH date after introduction of the Ilahi era was from very few mints. Narnol was one of them. The coin here as well as the one I posted recently (as refered above) have striking resemblances. So is there a strong possibility that the coin is possibly a Dam of Narnol?

This dam is most probably from Narnol mint..

Even if Ilahi 31 is known as the first Ilahi date on dams, they were mainly minted by mughal mints since Ilahi 33 (999 AH), and dams with AH dates after 1000 AH are not common. As far I know 3 mints have kept the traditional AH dates after yr. 1000 : Ajmer, Chitor and Narnol (last known date: 1013 for a 1/2 dam of Narnol); may be other exist ? it could be interesting to know the reason...

As per  Andrew Liddle's 'Coinage of Akbar', the coins were minted in Ajmer in AH 979, 978-1000, 1002, 1009. So it effectively rules out Ajmer. That leaves Chitor and Narnol. Need to check the dates for Chitor............

For Chitor mint, Whitehead listed dams of following dates (catalogue of mughal coins in Lahore museum): AH 999, 1000, 1003, 1004 and 1005
and Brown (Lucknow museum) : AH 1001, 1003, 1005 and 1006
It is to notice that no coins are listed before 999 AH for this mint.
