Most likely the image was hand touched up to enhance the clarity.
That was fairly common practice in old photos.

Here is the one cent French Indo-China. Struck in Paris, with mintmark A and Patey's torch, but the style of the coin reminds me of Daniel-Dupuis, not Patey.
