Albania Plans Gold Coins To Honor Mother Teresa

20 May 2010 | Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha announced on Wednesday that the government will mint a series of gold and silvers coins with Mother Teresa's portrait in honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth.

"We should use budget funds to mint a series of gold and silver coins with her portrait," Berisha said during a cabinet meeting.

Born Agnese Gonxhe Bojaxhiu to ethnic Albanian parents in Skopje, Macedonia in 1910, Mother Teresa moved to Calcutta in India in 1929, where she remained until her death in 1997.

She was posthumously beatified by the Vatican in 2003, and is in line for fast-track canonization as a saint, for her missionary work that spread around the world. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to alleviate the suffering of the sick, poor and dying.

In October Berisha started a row with India over the celebrated nun's remains, after asking them to be returned to Albania for the anniversary of her birth, which will be celebrated throughout the country with several cultural initiatives during the year.
