I completely agree with Mr. Patney. It's really ridiculous that mint is making such a huge profit by selling a poor quality coin. All the mints in the world make good profit, but they at-least maintain a good quality. Indian mints don't even do that.  ::) See Irish proof set for example : (Issue price : €80~INR 4900)

And now compare it with Indian proof set with issue price of 3000 or so.  ::)

And another thing is that they didn't make this coin available on their e-shop for collectors. How can one expect to visit Delhi just to buy one coin for issue price? I have to burn few thousand rupees for the trip, stay in hotel etc etc. This is a sign of immaturity of mint staff.

And even if they start selling this coin for issue price on their e-shop in future, I won't buy!

Mumbai mint may shortly sell the 5 Rs Tanjavour temple coin card to general public. Lets keep a watch on mint's ads as well as mint's website

It seems that after getting response at Indipex mints have changed the strategy , they have  find way of selling Rs.5 UNC coins in card like packing at exorbitant price of Rs.400 +............. Ebay dreamers than offering same coins double the mint's price .

Who is regulating who  or who is supporting who (RBI / Mints /Ebay sellers.............) can any one guess ?

Cheers ;D

i think if they stopped coming out with new coins for 10 years that would give me enough time to catch up.

Dear Aan,

There is no regulation governing the issue of medals :)

Just wanted to point out the coin uploaded on worldcoinnews.blogspot.com ; contributor is PK Saha. The ashoka lion seems to be different from what was distributed in the coin cards. Anyone can confirm this?

i knew my investment would pay off.  lets see if the mint marks are different i know or sure that the lions are.

Yesterday I read a short but interesting blog post. The blogger is Spanish, but the entry is written in English. Anyway the best of it is the photos you can find. Although the coins shown belong to the same mint, it seems that there are important differences for some of them, so he states there could be two varieties.

Sorry if you wrote about this before.  ???

Figleaf

My first though was "worn die" but then I saw the R and S in RUPEES. I am more inclined to think "re-cut die" than "new variety", though.

I'm intrigued... I understand "worn die" to indicate details missing / slightly modified because the die is old... "recut" to indicate those fur rows ... But here the lions are as different as night and day in their design aspects. The other details though obvious are relatively trivial in this case... I would certaining qualify this as a variety . I think recut applied to Re1 coin of the 80s and early 90s ... But definitely not here.

are you trying to tell us something? i think its worn out collector

Figleaf

Well, the lions do indeed look slightly different to me, but that's difficult to judge from a picture, especially when one is a full, deep strike and the other seems weak or, my first impression, made with a worn out die. Lighting can play bad tricks on your eyes. It may look quite obvious with the coin in hand, but I didn't have that benefit. However, it is clear to even my worn out eyes that the lettering is different.

Hi All,

Any idea when the booking for this coin will start?
