The mint mark looks like that of Noida (dot) (or is it a diamond?) Noida mint hasn't struck any commemorative coins in last few years (except Homi Bhabha)...

The design is good, but they have wasted a lot of space in inscriptions etc...

Sanjayaji, many thanks for the information. Please post the picture of the 1000 rupees coin when it is available. It would have been better if the picture of the temple would have been bigger.

Hey Sanjay,

If I am not mistaken, this is one of the best designs I have seen in a long time! tell me you were being sarcastic about the motif!!!  ::)

I fully agree with Paisepagal. At least it is much much better than all the coins showing portraits of the Corrupt Politicians.

I agree with Paisepagal & Abhay. But India has issued many coins showing portraits of great sons and patriots.

I agree with you, Beekar. But why use coins to show the Great sons and patriots? The problem in India is our political system. If one particular Party is in Power, it will issue coins on its own Leaders, whether or not that particular leader is of National importance.

Just compare our system with that of USA. Recently, USA has started a Dollar Coin series on all the Past Presidents. Do you really think that KAMRAJ or Dr. SYAMA PRASAD MUKHERJEE is more of a national figure than Dr. RAJENDRA PRASAD? Although I am happy that at least now the Govt. is coming out with a coin on Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

But there are still many Past Presidents remaining who are to be featured on our Coins - Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Dr. Zakir Husain, Shri Varahagiri Venkata Giri, Dr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, SHRI NEELAM SANJIVA REDDY, and many more. Only GOD (or should we say the Govt. of India  >:D >:D) knows when a coin will be issued on these national heroes.

But that entire series is a HUGE flop show :D I'd rather prefer to see themes like this (Thanjavur temple etc) than any political leader/artist/patriots...

Dear Paisapagal, Abhay, Beekar

When I heard about the Rs 1000 coin for the first time, I was expecting the highest standards of design and engraving.  I am glad to know that forum members have given thumbs up to the design of Thanjavur Temple.

On the presidents of India..a potrait of Giani Zail Singh staring at me from my coin can easily give me sleepless nights. I think tigers, orchids and other flora and fauna of India will be much better choice. We can even have Tajmahal

Here you can view the details of the temple and the first coin of Rs 1000.00.

Thanks Mr Chaugule for the link. I also do remember the 1000 Rs notes of the 1970's which had this temple depicted on the reverse.

Today, I got 5 Rupee UNC coin of 1000 years of Brihadeeswarar temple at INDIPEX. SPMCIL is one of the sponsoror of the INDIPEX, and they have put a huge stall at the INDIPEX. The coin of 5 Rupee is in Plastic Credit Card Packing (Just like Gur-ti-Gaddi and Sister Alphonsa Coins) and have been minted by Mumbai Mint. (Will post the image in a day or two)

At the SPMCIL stall, Kolkata Mint and Mumbai Mint have also put their stalls, where they were selling Proof sets of Tagore, Commonwealth Games, 60th Anniversary of Commonwealth of Nations, ONGC, and single coin set of Braille and Brihahdeeswarar temple. But the prices were much higher than the booking rates by the Mints.

That 'plastic credit card packing' is called 'coin card' in Europe ;)(It is usually used for BU/Special UNC coins).

How much did you pay for it?

Is it a proof coin? 425 is too much! :o The previous issues in BU and proof were issued for 150 INR! Is 425 issue price by mint or dealers' current price?

Yes, RS. 425 is definitely too much, but I think SPMCIL is trying to take out the Sponsorship fee of INDIPEX out of selling these coins at a premium. And even after such a high price, the sales were quite good.
