Dear Friends

The GOI yesterday issued commemorative stamps and coins on 1000 years of the Thanjavur Temple. The temple was completed in the year 1010AD by Tamil King Raja Raja Chola I. It is the world's first complete granite temple and a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a height of 216 feet; it is one of the tallest temples of world.

Functions were held to mark the 1000 years of the Big Temple. For the first time in history, GOI issued commemorative coins of Rs 1000 (and Rs 5). Till now, the highest denomination minted by GOI is Rs 150/- (Tagore). The coins are minted by Mumbai mint.

I think the picture of the temple is engraved on the coin. I understand that GOI is using Sterling Silver (92.5% Silver) in the 1000 Rs coin against quaternary alloy (50% silver) being used till now for high denomination coins. I further understand that the size of 1000Rs coins is larger than 100/150 Rs coins. However, I am waiting for confirmation of these facts.

If confirmed then it would be big-- both literally and figuratively. I have read in the news that during the ceremony only the Rs 5 coin was released. Maybe they did not have time to mint a special Rs 1000 coin?? Do you have any pictures of the coin during launch? I hope it is not a circulating commemorative and they also make proof and unc sets (and include the Rs 1000 one in it!) ;D

Thanks for the news Sanjay ji.

A circulating Rs 1000 commemorative? Man,that would be pathetic.Unless the inflation in India hits a record like Zimbabwe,I don't think that we need such a coin :P

Hi Repindia

I confirm that my post is more reliable than newspaper reports.Rs 1000 coin was indeed issued yesterday.

Please don't take newspapers as gospel truth.

I worked on an international project which was in news for some reason. We had thick files of newspaper cuttings on project. However not a single newsitem had all the facts rights. There were at least 2-3 factual errors in all of them.

Is Thanjavur Temple same as Brihadeeswarar Temple? I am asking this question because yesterday, 26th Sep, 2010, SUNDAY, a stamp on Brihadeeswarar Temple has been released by India Post. So, in my opinion, both should be same.

Well, I did some searching on the Google, and now it is confirmed that indeed both are same.

Just checkout this link.

So, here is a chance for some private collector to come out with Philanumismatic Cover (PNC) on the Brihadeeswarar Temple. ;) ;)

If the proof set is consisting of a Rs 1000 coin (sterling silver),I'd not be surprised if its price is above 6k or even 7k.. ::)

Sanjay ji,
What is the size of the 1000 Rs coin relative to the 5?
Being in the position you are, would you be able to shed light on the design process?
Maybe due to the time pressures they could not do a through job.
Not saying that the talented students of NID did a great job!
Thanks!

This is not bad! I was expecting the worst and think the Rs 1000 coin might look better!
