Dear Friends

GOI is likely to issue commemorative coins on centenary of Mother Teresa shortly. She was born on 24 Aug 1910 so her centenary will be celebrated in Aug. Coins will be released on 24 Aug 2010. I understand that Kolkata Mint will make these coins. I am not sure of denominations, but I understand that it could be Rs 100 and Rs 5.

Side note for those who are interested in a "theme collection": The French Mint will also issue several collector coins on that occasion. Four silver and gold pieces are planned.

Thanks for the updates 8)

I don't think of a design other than a portrait of Mother Teresa, which will ultimately make it similar to last year's Sister Alphonsa commemorative. ::)

Christian, can you please show designs of French commemoratives? Or they aren't out yet? May be it's not a bad idea to forward these designs to Indian mints so that they come up with a nice design ;D

Well, the French pieces will show her with a child, and with Pope John Paul II http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,6331.0.html ... The latter may not be the best of all possible options for an Indian coin. :)

Thanks,Christian. As you said,if Pope appears on the Indian coin,it will create a huge controversy again! :D

But I liked the designs on both the French coins.Pity that none of them will be struck in circulation standards. :-\

By depicting John Paul, the French mint wants to emphasize the beatification, I suppose. But that is certainly not a requirement for a Mother Teresa commem. :) Her portrait alone, or maybe her with patients, would be fine ...

The news of Mother Teresa Coins as given by me on 16th April 2010 is almost confirmed.

Since it is her centeneray, we can safely conclude that the coin denomination will be Rs 100 & Rs 10/Rs5.

The coins are most likely to be produced by Kolkata Mint.

India plans Mother Teresa centenary coin
Published Date: July 16, 2010

Federal Home Minister P. Chidambaram is to introduce a Mother Teresa commemorative coin to mark the nun's birth centenary next month, a Church official said.

"We thank the government for its noble gesture," said Father Babu Joseph, spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India.

Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil would preside the public meeting that would mark the government celebration of the centenary programs in New Delhi on Aug. 28, he said. The coin would be introduced during the meeting.

This is part of a series of programs the Church and civil society is jointly organizing to observe the birth centenary of Blessed Teresa of Kolkata, popularly known as Mother Teresa.

The nuns of Missionaries of Charity congregation, which Blessed Teresa founded, will be part of the celebrations.

The coins would reach New Delhi only few days before the event, said senior officer A.K. Ajmani in the Coin and Currency department of the Finance Ministry.

The official gave no details about the design of the coin, which was approved by Sister Prema, head of the Missionaries of Charity.

Father Joseph said the coin "shows the kind of recognition and affection Indians have for Mother Teresa, who became an icon of charity in the country."

Mother Teresa, born on Aug. 26, 1910, arrived in Kolkata in 1929 as a Loreto nun.

She began her mission among "the poorest of the poor" in the slums of Kolkata and launched the Missionaries of Charity congregation in 1949. She died on Sept. 5, 1997.

Dear Friends

Mother Teresa commemoratives were finally released today. As indicated by me several weeks back, denominaion is Rs100 & Rs5. The coins were issued by the President of India.
Head of Missionaries of Charity, Sister Prema said that when Mother left Loretto Convent, there was exactly Rs5 in her purse! GOI has now issued Rs5 coin on her.

I will try to upload a photo of coin obtained from a journalist friend

The birthday & birth centenary of Mother Teresa was on 26th August 2010. however, the coin was released on 28th August 2010. Maybe because the dignitaries were preoccupied on 26th

The 5 rupee Mother Teresa coin is now available for Rs. 40.00 on Ebay. I think it should be available soon in the market as circulation coin.
