Syria: new 50 pound coin 2010

New Coin of Fifty Pound Value

Damascus, (SANA)- Governor of the Central Bank of Syria Adib Mayaleh announced that the bank will mint new coin of fifty pound value soon, Tishreen newspaper said Sunday .

Mayaleh added that the Legislative Decree No. 1 issued on 5/1/2010 on amending the Article No. 43 of the Law of the Central Bank of Syria and the Basic Monetary System No. 23 for the year 2002 allowed mintage of new currency of fifty pounds category in the form of metal.

In a privious statement to Tishreen Economy, He indicated that the bank will mint currencies of new categories. Mayaleh said, in a statement to Tishreen newspaper, that the mintage of the new currencies aims at coping with the large increase in population and needs of circulation.

The bank is adopting all necessary measures to set up the technical designs in preparation for issuing the new currencies and putting them into circulation in the next few months.

And 25 pounds coins, along with 5 and 10 pounds coins, also have latent image too. I think the higher value coin shouldn't have security feature less than lower value coin.

Is it a commemorative issue or a regular one? The three different 25 pound coins they have are commemoratives,and none of them 'circulate' as such (one of my relative spent few years there while he was working for a petroleum company).
And what's the purchasing power of 50 pounds in Syria? Since most of the African countries are now facing inflation problem,I wouldn't be too surprised if this new coin is hardly of any use to buy something.. ::)

Any further news on 50 pound coin.

As I understand, the orders were awarded to Swiss mint and they are yet to deliver.
