Real Story Behind the 5 Rs Tagore Proof Coins:

Rabindranath Tagore founded the Shantiniketan (Now Visva Bharati University). Few months back, Kolkata Mint made few 5 Rs Tagore Proof coins in a nice presentation pack for the professors of Visva Bharati University. The coin was in a capsule engraved with the name of the mint. This pack was better than the usual blister packs.

Some coin dealers started selling these packs for a hefty price of Rs 12,000. The full Tagore proof set containing 150 Rs coin with 50% silver was available for Rs 5500. However 5 Rs single proof coin was being sold for Rs 12000. They were selling 5 Rs coin as a premium item issued for the first time in superior packing and in limited numbers.

I felt very very bad.  I tried to  'persuade' the mint to open the booking for the same coin set for the general public. As a result of my persistent efforts, the mint finally allowed the general public to obtain this coin set for a paltry sum of Rs 300. The cartel of coin dealers was broken. The coin collectors made a saving of Rs 11,700 but I got many 'Gaalis' from the coin dealers.

Kansal Ji,

It is quite possible that some of the respected members of our forum may think that this is a fabricated story.

However some of my close friends are aware of the truth. They are well aware of whole sequence of events. I shared this with them one year back when Kolkata mint has not put a press ad for booking of these coins..

The story is great! It's not just the money. Even more important is the principle. You have shown in very practical terms that if a state organisation acts stupidly or in an elitist way, it is possible to complain and that with perseverance, you have a chance to succeed against the bureaucrats and you need not fear their retribution. This is exactly what separates a democracy from a dictatorship, where the bureaucrats are always right, especially when they are wrong.

In addition, your example is showing young Indians the way to development: think and act independently, not reflexively. Development does not come from rules and by order of the government, but from positive creativity and holding the government accountable.

My warm congratulations and a big thank you for what you have done.

Peter

I certainly don't Believe anything is fabricated here ... Infact I think there must be quite a bit more  :)
Chalk up one more for Sanjay, he got the Mumbai mint to put up it's sales counter list on it's website. Id usually say mere mortals don't get results like Sanjay has  ;D
