I expect I will get a few of them soon. Price will not be really good, but I like the idea of Tagore in a circulation coin. Someway, I liked some of his tales when I was a child, so it will not be a big effort. :)

Pls refer to my earlier post (Reply no 24) on this thread on 4 Nov 10.

I talked about confusion prevailing in minds of bureaucrats on years / anniversaries.

Today is the death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. Full page ads were issued in leading newspapers like TOI, HT, Indian Express etc by GOI and UP Govt.

The ads issued by Ministry of Social Justice (GOI ) tells us that its 55th Mahaparinirvan Diwas

At the same time, the ads issued by UP Govt proclaims it to be 56th death anniversary.

Friends

I received Rabindranath Tagore commemoratives few days back (in 2010). Kolkata has not used any writeup on Tagore. Instead, all the pafges of booklet have pictures of Tagore & Shantiniketan. Maybe Kolkata guys are scared after mistakes in Bhagat Singh & Rajendra Prasad.

All of you are aware that Tagore completes 150 years in 2011. So its first time that Kolkata has delivered 2011 coin in 2010!. Otherwise, they take few years...

In my opinion.
1) One major issue is quality control .
2) Another issue  the   mint is being patronize by few dealers (to issue error coins) or vice versa.
3) Lead time is another issue from the start date for  booking of UNC & proof coins.

Criticism is easy but I am not criticizing instead some room is always there for improvement of minting processes .

Let us hope for it and expect some miracle from Kolkatta.
Cheers ;D

Royal Mint (UK) does that frequently..BU and proof sets of next year are made available months before December..and this time 2011 dated coins were found in circulation in 2010..

But I'd be happy if Kolkata mint follows Royal Mint's quality control measures too ;)

Like a bad penny...
Sirsi, Feb 25

Friday brought an unusual surprise for Anjana Bhat, an award-winning artisan here. She received a set of Rabindranath Tagore commemorative coins in the denominations Rs 150 and Rs 5, through courier.

It was the second time the courier delivery man tried to deliver the package to Bhat, a State awardee for handicrafts. A fortnight ago, she refused to accept the package from the sender "Prabandhak, Bharat Sarkar, India Government Mint, Alipore, Kolkata" that was insured for Rs 2,310. Besides it was addressed to 'Anani Bhat' although the residential address was correct.

"I was puzzled. I had no clue who sent the package, why it came to me and what I was supposed to do with it," Bhat told Deccan Herald.

The package, which had obviously returned to the sender in Kolkata, like the proverbial bad penny, returned two weeks later. This time, Bhat recalled that the previous year, when she received the award from the State Handicrafts Development Corporation her name had been misspelt as 'Anani Bhat'.

It was with a mixed sense of resignation and curiosity that Bhat accepted the package, to find that it contained the commemorative coins.

Bhat is flummoxed about why she had been chosen for the gift of coins as she had not sought them. The envelope containing the coins had no letter giving the reasons nor a telephone number on which the sender could be contacted.

When her son surfed the web to resolve the mystery, he found that the coin was released to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of poet Rabindranath Tagore.

An RBI officer Deccan Herald spoke to said the new coins were sent only on order. A prescribed application form had to be filled in and submitted to RBI which would forward it to the Mint, the Department of Finance, Government of India. The department would send the coins to the addressee. He said the coins would cost double or thrice the denomination and not many would apply.

The 150-rupee coin issued by the Reserve Bank of India, weighs 35 gm and has 50 per cent of silver, 40 per cent of copper and five per cent of nickel and zinc. Both the 15-rupee and five-rupee coins have Tagore's image on the reverse.

How to approach RBI for getting a bag of these coins ?
Thx

Not so easy.. ::)

Go to RBI local branch (there's one in Bangalore AFAIK)..There's always a separate section for distribution of coins. Stand in the queue for hours and ask the cashier if the newly issued coins are available or not. Usually they don't hesitate and if available, you will get it immediately. But according to new guidelines by RBI, a person can get only 100 pieces of commemorative coins at a time (applies only to commemorative issues), not more than that...Things become easier if you have some friend working in RBI.. 8)
